PROGRESS REPORT

KPLB ACTIVITIES AFTER UNFCCC 2015 AND

EQUATOR AWARD 2015

End of December 2015 to March 2016

Thanks to the Equator Initiative and UNDP which has given appreciation of the work that we did and also gave the opportunity to present at the peak of the UNFCCC in Paris.

Experience for 3 weeks in Paris, the opportunity to meet with many people as well as share experiences and learn from each other over there, as well as the Equator Award 2015 award meant a lot to encourage the work that we do. This award also means a responsibility to spread and share this information to others and build the efforts addressing climate change and global warming. Its need a concrete activities such as raising awareness, strengthening of policies and real conservation activities and so on.

In this regard, some of the agendas pursued by KPLB after the return of the French in the face of climate change, among others:

January to March 2016

ROADSHOW & DISCUSSION ON GLOBAL WARMING AND CLIMATE CHANGED TO SCHOOLS ...

Roadshow and this discussion is meant to socialize, broaden, strengthen and build solutions together, what can be done by students, teachers, and the community with regard to climate change and global warming.

These activities are carried out with a target of 3 middle schools and three secondary schools with a total number of participants to 400 participants.

Material presented is sharing about the activities of the UNFCCC and the EQUATOR INITIATIVE AWARD 2015 in France, the general discussion on Global Warming and Climate Change as well as film screenings.

The results of this activity can be seen that the understanding of the global warming and climate change is still quite low and still looked confused about what role could be done to participate in global warming. Therefore this kind of activity should be done rapidly so the understanding and also the target to rise the awareness in adaptation of climate change and global warming can be achieved.

Some of the agendas are sharing about the activities of the UNFCCC and the Equator Initiative, discussions on Global Warming and Climate Change, and signing the MOU between KPLB and Bangka Belitung University.

Almost the same as happened in discussions with school children, an understanding of the global warming and climate change and the active role that can be done is still relatively quite low, but the passion for doing something from the grand students and the university does have a passion to build the campus as an agent of changes in save the environment.

STILL TARSIUS EDITION

Thanks God, Tarsius has choosed as the mascot of Tafisa World Games 2016. The uniqueness and the specific character of Tarsus become the reason why they choose it.

Right now we are still doing a research about the tarsius collaboration with miss. Fifin Fitriana, a post graduate student from Institute Pertanian Bogor (IPB). This research pointed on the title "Preferential Spatial Models of the Belitung Tarsier" which will run for 3 months.

CLOSING

What we mention above are some of the work we could do. All these are done with a spirit of voluntary and self-financing.

There are still a lot of dreams, that want to achieve in order to improve environmental quality and public welfare without damaging the environment, and also save the flora and fauna that are already endangered.

Dream in the near future to do, among others:

  • Establishing a “nature school” which aims to educate children to love nature and build a educational activities space and close to nature.

  • Educating children with a target of 1,000 children.

  • Create a sanctuary for deer whose existence is increasingly rare.

  • Building a turtle breeding facility that is better than the ones we already have today.

  • The target for 2016 is to conserve and release as many as 2500 sea turtle hatchlings.

However, to realize the dreams of the above is not easy. Beside needs a passion, hard work, commitment, also require substantial funding, and sometimes the last is not easy to find, specially like us in the small island.

Hopefully what we submit above as our progress report after UNFCCC 2015 and Equator Award 2015 could be useful for the environment, society and GEF Sgp, also the UNDP and the Equator Initiative, as well as friends, ngo, cso, who are moving on the same vision of realizing a good quality of living space, justice for the people and for the environment. Input and support from all of you are highly expected.

Warm regards,

Budi Setiawan

Head of Kelompok Peduli Lingkungan Belitung
